Past Continuous Tense হল একটি Verb Tense যা অতীতে একটি নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে চলমান কর্মগুলি বর্ণনা করতে ব্যবহৃত হয় বা অতীতে চলমান কর্ম বর্ণনা করে। এটি Main Verb-এর “to be” (was/were) এবং Present participle (-ing) এর অতীত কাল ব্যবহার করে গঠিত হয়।
When describing actions that were ongoing at a particular point in the past, the past continuous tense is used. It is created by combining the present participle (-ing) of the main verb with the past tense of “to be” (was/were).
Form(গঠন):
Positive form: Subject + was/were + present participle verb(-ing) + object

Some Positive form sentences example:
- She was eating pizza.(সে পিজ্জা খাচ্ছিল।)
- We were eating Burger. (আমরা বার্গার খাচ্ছিলাম।)
- I was watching TV.(আমি টিভি দেখছিলাম।)
Negative form: Subject + was not/were not + present participle verb(-ing) + object

Some Negative form sentences example:
- I wasn’t drinking coffee.(আমি কফি পান করছিলাম না।)
- They weren’t eating pizza.(তারা পিৎজা খাচ্ছিল না।)
- We weren’t not joking. (আমরা রসিকতা করিনি।)
Question form: Was/Were + Subject + present participle verb(-ing) + object

Some Question form sentences example:
- Was He eating Pizza?(সে কি পিৎজা খাচ্ছিল?)
- Were they drinking Coffee?(তারা কি কফি পান করছিল?)
- Were you playing football?(আপনি কি ফুটবল খেলছিলেন?)
ছোট্ট কুইজ: নিচে আরো কিছু বাক্য দেয়া আছে। যেগুলো form/গঠন সূত্র দেখে তোমরা নেগেটিভ এবং প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্য বানিয়ে ফেলো। যেমন, বাক্যে “She was eating pizza.” এটা পজেটিভ। আর এটার নেগেটিভ Form করলে হবে ”She wasn’t eating pizza.”. এবং এটা প্রশ্নবোধক হবে “Was she eating pizza.”😃
- She was eating pizza. (সে পিজ্জা খাচ্ছিল।)
- He was watching TV.(তিনি টিভি দেখছিলেন।)
- I was studying when she called me. (যখন সে আমাকে ডাকল তখন আমি পড়াশোনা করছিলাম।)
- He was watching TV when the power went out. যখন সে আমাকে ডাকল তখন আমি পড়াশোনা করছিলাম।)
- They were driving to the beach when it started raining. (বিদ্যুৎ চলে গেলে তিনি টিভি দেখছিলেন।)
Usage (ব্যবহার):
অতীতের একটি নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে চলমান ক্রিয়াগুলি বর্ণনা করতে Past Continuous Tense ব্যবহার করা হয়। এটি প্রায়শই ব্যাকগ্রাউন্ড অ্যাকশন বর্ণনা করতে ব্যবহৃত হয় যা ঘটছিল যখন অন্য একটি ক্রিয়া সংঘটিত হয়েছিল।
For example:
- I was sleeping when the phone rang. (Background action: ফোনটা বেজে উঠতেই ঘুমাচ্ছিলাম।)
- She was cooking dinner while he was doing the laundry. (Simultaneous actions:তিনি যখন লন্ড্রি করছেন তখন তিনি রাতের খাবার রান্না করছিলেন। অর্থ্যাৎ একযোগে কাজ হচ্ছে )
- They were walking in the park when they saw a deer. (Background actions: পার্কে হাঁটতে হাঁটতে তারা একটি হরিণ দেখতে পান।)
Guide words(কিছু নির্দেশিকা শব্দ):
Some common signal words used with the past continuous tense include “while”, “when”, “as”, “at that moment/time”, “just”, “always”, and “constantly”. These signal words are used to indicate that the action was in progress at a specific time in the past.
নির্দেশিকা শব্দসহ বাক্যের উদাহরণ (For example):
- While: I was cooking dinner while he was setting the table. (তিনি টেবিল সেট করার সময় আমি রাতের খাবার রান্না করছিলাম।)
- When: She was sleeping when the phone rang. (ফোন বেজে উঠলে সে ঘুমাচ্ছিল।)
- As: The band was playing as we entered the concert hall. (আমরা কনসার্ট হলে প্রবেশ করার সাথে সাথে ব্যান্ড বাজছিল।)
- At that moment/time: He was playing guitar at that moment. (সে সেই মুহূর্তে গিটার বাজাচ্ছিল।)
- Just: They were just finishing their dinner when we arrived. (আমরা যখন পৌঁছলাম তখন তারা সবেমাত্র তাদের রাতের খাবার শেষ করছিল।)
- Always: He was always studying in the library. (তিনি সর্বদা লাইব্রেরিতে অধ্যয়ন করতেন।)
- Constantly: The kids were constantly playing outside (বাচ্চারা ক্রমাগত বাইরে খেলছিল)
